Fairing Design
Vehicle fairing created using Coroplastâ„¢
The competition requires each car to have a fairing around the vehicle. Despite this being a requirement, any team hoping to place well in the competition knows that a faired bicycle is the way to go. Because the fairing on our bicycle is not a load-carrying member, the design options are virtually limitless.
Constraints-
Economic Constraint: Simply said, carbon fiber would be the most efficient material for this project, but because carbon fiber's price per square foot is around 45 dollars, it has been ruled out for the fairing.
Manufacturability Constraint: If a composite is chosen for the fairing material, TCNJ may or may not have the facilities required to mix the resin matrix and fibers due to the hazardous fumes released in the mixing process.
Possible alternative materials-
-Coroplast™ -Fiberglass -Zotefoam
-Sheet Aluminum -ABS plastic - High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
